New plan limits, and what happens past them

Every plan now has a monthly bandwidth allowance, storage moves from the database to the file pool, and a project that outgrows its plan is suspended instead of quietly stuck.

Skapi

Database storage goes down on both paid plans, bandwidth stops being unlimited, and a project that holds more than its plan allows now gets suspended. File storage goes up on both paid plans, record payloads that used to sit in the database now live in file storage, where they cost a fraction as much, and the Free plan can send newsletters.

When this takes effect

The newsletter changes, including newsletters on Free, apply from today.

The new storage and bandwidth limits apply at least 30 days from the date of this post. Until then no project is suspended for holding more than its plan allows, and if one of yours is over a new limit, we write to you first.

File storage pools your web hosting, your record file attachments and your AI index into one figure.

Compared with before:

  • Free: 50 user accounts instead of 100, newsletters included, and a 10 GB bandwidth allowance. Database and file storage are unchanged.
  • Standard: database storage from 10 GB to 3 GB, file storage from 100 GB to 120 GB, and a 100 GB bandwidth allowance.
  • Premium: database storage from 50 GB to 10 GB, file storage from 500 GB to 600 GB, and a 400 GB bandwidth allowance.

A Free project that already has more than 50 user accounts keeps every one of them. It only stops taking new signups until it is back under 50 or moves to a paid plan. User accounts never suspend a project.

Why the database got smaller

Record payloads larger than 32 KB are now stored in file storage automatically and still come back with the record. They cost less there, so the database allowance shrinks and the file allowance grows. Total storage goes up on both paid plans.

You do not have to change anything to get this. The SDK puts an offloaded payload back together for you, so record.data still arrives whole, and a build from before the change gets the payload filled in by the server instead. That fallback is bounded by the size of the response, so a large read can still hand an older build the raw marker. It is a good moment to run npm i skapi-js and pick up the current release.

Bandwidth now has an allowance

Every plan now includes monthly bandwidth: 10 GB on Free, 100 GB on Standard and 400 GB on Premium. You can see this month's figure on your project's Plan & Usage card.

For now nothing changes when you go over: requests past the allowance are still served, and Premium bandwidth past the allowance is not billed. We will post here before either is switched on. When it is, a Free or Standard project past its allowance gets errors on downloads and hosted pages until the next month starts. It is never suspended for bandwidth. Premium keeps serving and bills the excess at $0.12 per GB.

When a project holds more than its plan allows

Free and Standard stop at their limits, as they always have: past a limit the write, signup, subscription or send is refused and nothing is charged. What is new is stored data. If a Free or Standard project's database storage or file storage is over its plan's limit, the project is suspended. Premium is never suspended: it is billed instead.

  • Its users cannot reach it: API requests, sign in, signups, file links and hosted pages are refused.
  • You keep access in the dashboard. You can open the project and delete its records, files, hosting files and newsletters. Other settings are locked until it is back to normal.
  • It returns to normal on its own as soon as it is back under every limit, or when you move it to a plan that holds its data.
  • If it is still suspended 30 days later, it is permanently deleted. A project with an active subscription is never deleted: it stays suspended until its data fits.

We e-mail you when a project of yours is suspended, and again at least 7 days before it would be deleted. The dashboard shows which limit is over, by how much, the earliest date the project could be deleted, and a link to the page where you can delete that data.

Email storage never suspends a project. On Free and Standard, going over it deletes the oldest newsletters to make room. On Premium nothing is deleted and the excess is billed.

Cancelling no longer suspends

Cancel a paid plan and the project keeps it until the end of the billing period, then moves to Free. The cancellation alone never suspends it. It is only suspended if, on that day, it holds more than Free allows, and the cancel dialog tells you beforehand if it does.

If a payment fails, the plan stays active while the payment is retried. Only if every retry fails does the project move to Free.

Premium overage

Premium has no hard stop. Past an included limit the excess is metered and added to your next invoice. These rates replace the old ones.

Metric Rate past the included limit
File storage $0.05 per GB-month
Database storage $0.50 per GB-month
Email storage $0.10 per GB-month
Email sends $1.00 per 1,000
Newsletter subscribers $1.00 per 1,000 subscribers-month
Bandwidth $0.12 per GB, not billed yet
Monthly active users Free

Storage overage is time weighted rather than a high water mark, so a project that sits over a limit for two days pays for two days and not for the month.

Newsletters, on every plan

Every plan can collect newsletter subscribers and send newsletters, Free included. A Free project holds up to 50 subscribers and sends up to 50 mails a month, with 50 MB of email storage.

  • Sends are counted per recipient. One newsletter to a full list of 50 uses a Free project's whole month.
  • One owner, 200 a month across Free projects. On top of each Free project's own 50, one owner can send 200 newsletter mails a month in total across every Free project they have. Standard and Premium are counted per project and have no owner cap.
  • Spam complaints stop sending, on every plan. A project stops sending newsletters when it reaches 5 spam complaints in a month, or a complaint rate of 0.5 percent once at least 100 mails have gone out. Only newsletter sending stops: the project keeps working, nothing is suspended, and Skapi staff clear the block after a look.
  • You are told why. Whenever a newsletter is refused, for a complaint shutoff, for the owner cap or for the project's own monthly sends, the sender gets a reply from the project's newsletter address saying which limit was reached.

None of this touches the rest of your mail: signup confirmations, verification codes and every other system mail keep going.

In short

  • Free: 50 user accounts, 500 MB database, 1 GB file storage, 10 GB bandwidth, and newsletters with 50 subscribers, 50 sends a month and 50 MB of email storage.
  • Standard: 3 GB database, 120 GB file storage, 100 GB bandwidth.
  • Premium: 10 GB database, 600 GB file storage, 400 GB bandwidth, and overage billed instead of a stop.
  • Record data over 32 KB moves to file storage on its own, and the SDK still hands it back whole.
  • Bandwidth allowances are metered now and not enforced yet.
  • Over a database or file storage limit on Free or Standard, a project is suspended until its data is reduced or its plan changes, and one without an active subscription is deleted 30 days later.
  • Cancelling moves a project to Free at the end of the period instead of suspending it.
  • Newsletters work on every plan, with an owner cap across Free projects and a spam complaint shutoff everywhere.

If one of your projects is over a new limit, you have time: we will write to you before anything is enforced, and the Plan & Usage card already shows where you stand.
